Barcelona Wins European Champions League Final

Messi, Villa, Rodriguez each score in 3-1 victory over Manchester United
WEMBLEY, England - Lionel Messi scored one goal and created another Saturday, leading Barcelona to a 3-1 victory over Manchester United and a third Champions League title in six years.
Barcelona dominated play at Wembley with trademark one-touch passing, but the Spanish champions needed the Argentine striker to conjure a 54th-minute solo strike from the edge of the penalty area to take the lead for the second time.
There seemed to be no space as Messi was tracked by fullback Patrice Evra. But the two-time world player of the year spotted a gap between the central defenders and hit a shot down the middle, beating goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
essi followed his 53rd goal of a remarkable season with a fake and run that led to David Villa taking possession on the edge of the area. From there, the Spain striker curled a shot into the top corner of the net.
With Pedro Rodriguez scoring the opening goal midway through the first half from an imaginative through ball from Xavi Hernandez, the win was as comprehensive as Barcelona's 2-0 victory over United in the final two years ago.
United improved upon its performance back then in Rome and did the score in the 34th on a goal by Wayne Rooney. But it could do little to disrupt Barcelona, the prevailing force of European soccer.
fter a shaky opening, Barcelona simply outclassed the English champions. Xavi, standing in as captain for injured defender Carles Puyol, orchestrated play from in front of Sergio Busquets, while Andres Iniesta and Messi tormented United with the pinpoint accuracy of their passing.
It was said before the game that Barcelona, which already had won a third straight Spanish league title, would be ranked among soccer's truly great teams with a victory over United. Now, with four European titles, only Liverpool, AC Milan and Barcelona's fierce rival Real Madrid have won more.

EBay and PayPal sue Google over trade secrets

(Reuters) - EBay and its online payment unit, PayPal Inc, on Thursday sued Google Inc and two executives for stealing trade secrets related to mobile payment systems.
The two executives, Osama Bedier and Stephanie Tilenius, were formerly with PayPal and led the launch on Thursday of Google's own mobile payment system in partnership with MasterCard, Citigroup and phone company Sprint.
The suit highlights the growing battle by a wide range of companies from traditional finance to Silicon Valley trying to take a major stake in what has been described as a $1 trillion opportunity in mobile payments. The mobile phone is seen as the digital personal wallet of the future.
The eBay suit said Bedier worked for nine years at PayPal, most recently serving as vice president of platform, mobile and new ventures. He joined Google on January 24 this year.
Tilenius was at eBay from 2001 to October 2009 and served as a consultant to the company until March 2010. The suit says Tilenius joined Google in February 2010 as vice president of e-commerce.
Bedier is accused in the suit of having "misappropriated PayPal trade secrets by disclosing them within Google and to major retailers."
The suit accused Tilenius of recruiting Bedier, thereby breaking a contractual agreement with eBay. It also claims Bedier attempted to recruit former colleagues still at PayPal.
Ebay said PayPal and Google worked closely together for three years until this year on developing a commercial deal where PayPal would serve as a payment option for mobile application purchases on Google's Android phones.
It said Bedier was the senior PayPal executive leading and finalizing negotiations with Google on Android during this period.
It also claimed Bedier transferred up-to-date versions of documents outlining PayPal's mobile payment strategies to his non-PayPal computer just days before leaving PayPal for Google.
"By hiring Bedier, with his trade secret knowledge of PayPal's plans and understanding of Google's weaknesses as viewed by the industry leader (PayPal), Google bought the most comprehensive and sophisticated critique of its own problems available," the suit said.
Google spokesman Aaron Zamost said the company had not yet received a copy of the complaint would not be able to comment until it has had a chance to review it.
Google and PayPal have done battle in the recent past in online payments via computers with the launch of Google Checkout in 2006, but Checkout has had a minimal impact on PayPal's market dominance.
The suit was filed at Superior Court of the State of California, county of Santa Clara, Case No: CV20l863.

Bloomberg Invokes Stonewall Protest in Call for Gay Marriage

May 26 (Bloomberg) -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, citing the riot at the Stonewall Inn in 1969 that led to the gay-rights movement, called for state lawmakers to approve a bill allowing same-sex marriage.
“The time has come for us to fulfill the dreams that exploded into Sheridan Square 42 years ago: to allow thousands of men and women to become full members of the American family, and to take the next step on the inspiring journey our founding fathers first began,” Bloomberg said today in a speech at Manhattan’s Cooper Union college.

Tornadoes death toll rises, more storms forecast

(Reuters) - The death toll from a monster tornado that savaged Joplin, Missouri, rose to 125 on Wednesday and tornadoes overnight in nearby states caused at least 14 more deaths.
The Joplin tornado on Sunday was rated an EF-5, the highest possible on the Enhanced Fujita scale of tornado power and intensity, with winds of at least 200 miles per hour.
EF-5 tornadoes are rare in the United States but already this year there have been at least four. They are so destructive that experts said they can turn a house into a missile.

Now disgraced ex-IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn to get $250,000 'golden parachute'... funded by U.S. TAXPAYERS

Dominique Strauss-Kahn is set to receive a $250,000 'golden parachute' severance payment - and American taxpayers will help fund it.
The former International Monetary Fund chief, who quit after being charged with sexually assaulting a New York hotel maid, is also due to be handed a pension.
U.S. Congressmen reacted angrily to the deal but conceded they are almost powerless to stop it from going ahead.
They may be able to prevent it if they threaten to reduce or withdraw the U.S. contribution to the fund.
But this seems unlikely to happen, after the IMF admitted it had 'no discretion' over the deal, signed in 2007, which states Strauss-Kahn would receive a severance payout if he resigned after at least two years.
'What does it say about the IMF that its managing director has a higher annual salary than the president of the United States, that he stays at $3,000-per-night hotel rooms, and that he gets a quarter of a million dollars in severance pay while awaiting charges for attempted rape?' asked Republican Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers.
She also questioned whether the IMF, which has said its hands are tied on the deal, have 'more leeway' than it was letting on.
She added: 'American taxpayers, who pay the largest share of the IMF's bills, are raising a lot of important questions.
"Many companies can deny severance pay to any executive fired 'for cause.'
'That is not happening in the IMF's case.
'It's becoming more and more clear that the 'culture of entitlement' that is demonstrated by Mr Strauss-Kahn's lifestyle set a tone for the organisation as a whole.'

Phew, volcano runs out of puff: Hope for holiday-makers as eruption eases... but we could still have a black Friday

  • Giant ash cloud 'less dense than first predicted'
  • Relief for millions of Britons planning Bank Holiday getaway
  • Most, 'if not all' planes should be able to fly
  • 'Only a handful' of UK flights facing disruption
  • Germany and Holland bear brunt of cloud today
  • Friday could still see severe disruption from ash already in the atmosphere
The volcanic ash threat to the Bank Holiday getaway for millions of families has been 'lifted, the Government  declared today.
A giant ash cloud is still on course to arrive over the UK at a  height of 35,000ft by noon tomorrow (FRI) - but will be less dense than first predicted, according to the latest Met Office forecast.
But aviation chiefs have been given new powers and new contingency plans to allow planes to fly under the cloud in case the  Icelandic volcano erupts again in future. It is the first time planes have been allowed to fly under a volcanic cloud in UK airspace.

US online retail spending

Retail spending in America bounces back

AMERICA'S shoppers spent over $1 billion online on Monday November 29th, the biggest one-day total ever recorded, according to comScore, an internet-research firm. Spending over the holiday season is growing again after two miserable years for consumers and retailers alike. Monday's sales alone were 16% higher than last year's "Cyber Monday" total of $887m. And in traditional bricks-and-mortar stores, the story is similar. The National Retail Federation estimated that 212m people hit the shops over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, 9% more than in 2009, while the average amount spent by each rose from $343 to $365.

Icelandic Volcanoes

Ash cloud to shut German airports, snarls British air travel
London (CNN) -- A cloud of ash from Iceland's Grimsvotn volcano spread toward central Europe late Tuesday, spurring German authorities to announce two airports will close and prompting British airlines to cancel hundreds of flights.
Hamburg International Airport will shut down at 6 a.m. Wednesday (midnight Tuesday ET), while Bremen's airport will close at 5 a.m., Germany's Aviation Safety Agency announced. Berlin's airport could be affected by the falling ash by noon Wednesday, the agency said.
A portion of the ash from Saturday's eruption in Iceland had spread over Britain by Tuesday afternoon, with the cloud reaching London's Heathrow airport -- the world's busiest international air travel hub -- around lunchtime, a computer model indicated. The European air traffic control organization Eurocontrol reported about 500 flights in British airspace were canceled Tuesday, roughly double the number expected earlier in the day.
The ash cloud was projected to cover all of British airspace by early Wednesday morning and will be densest over Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, according to Britain's weather agency, the Met Office. But British Airways, which sent a test flight into the region Tuesday evening, said it expects service to return to normal by Wednesday.

Jimmy Choo Sold to Labelux for About $800 Million

Labelux, a privately held luxury group, said Sunday that it had agreed to acquire the high-end shoe and accessories company Jimmy Choo from TowerBrook Capital Partners, a private equity firm, and minority shareholders for an undisclosed sum.
TowerBrook had been considering taking Jimmy Choo public, but opted to sell the firm to a strategic buyer that valued the company at about £500 million, or $800 million, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said, declining to elaborate or be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.
‘‘Jimmy Choo has expanded from 60 stores to an international footprint of 120 sites and substantial potential awaits the Jimmy Choo brand, particularly in Asia, where Labelux has a proven track record,’’ said Ramez Sousou, co-chief executive of TowerBrook, which bought the company in 2007.
Labelux, based in Austria, is one division of Joh. A. Benckiser, the investment arm of the Reimann family. Founded in 2007, Labelux already holds such fashion brands as Bally, Derek Lam and Zagliani in its portfolio. Jimmy Choo’s top management, including its founder and chief creative officer, Tamara Mellon, as well as its chief executive, Joshua Schulman, plan to remain with the company after it changes hands.
Labelux hired Rothschild as its financial adviser and Hogan Lovells as legal counsel. Mr. Schulman was advised by Pearce LLP. Ms. Mellon was advised by MX Capital Partners, Vedder Price and Travers Smith. TowerBrook hired Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley as its advisers, and Kirkland & Ellis as legal counsel. The deal is expected to close next month.

Greek PM, ECB officials reject debt restructuring

(Reuters) - Greece must avoid debt restructuring and push on with budget cuts and privatisations to overcome its debt crisis, the country's Prime Minister George Papandreou and senior ECB officials said on Saturday.
Papandreou must present a fiscal plan next week that is credible enough for the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to continue bankrolling his debt-laden country. But a large majority of Greeks reject more austerity, according to a poll published on Saturday, which also shows the ruling socialists losing their lead versus the conservative opposition for the first time since their 2009 election victory."Debt restructuring is not under discussion," Papandreou said in an interview in Sunday newspaper Ethnos.
One year into its EU/IMF 110-billion euro bailout, Greece is struggling with weak revenues and deep recession, fuelling speculation that it will have to restructure its debt to pull itself out of the fiscal mess that triggered a euro zone crisis. The chairman of the 17-country Eurogroup Jean-Claude Juncker said on Tuesday Greece may have to move toward a "soft restructuring" of its debt. But the European Central Bank remains strongly opposed to such a move, due to fears that it would destabilise the euro.
Greece has no other option but to follow through its fiscal plan, ECB governing council member Ewald Nowotny told Greek newspaper To Vima on Saturday. "For the ECB, the line is one and clear: you have to implement the commitments you have made."
In a separate interview in newspaper Kathimerini, ECB executive board member Juergen Stark said any kind of debt restructuring would thwart the country's return to bond markets and undermine reforms. "We are at a critical juncture, what it really takes now is action," Stark said.
On Friday, Fitch became the second major ratings agency to warn that it would consider any kind of debt restructuring as a sovereign default -- exactly the kind of outcome euro zone governments are trying to avoid.
Asked by Ethnos if he would consider a debt "reprofiling" rather than a restructuring, Papandreou said: "We are looking after our job... We do not join the public discussion about such scenarios."
LIMITS OF AUSTERITY, PRIVATISATIONS
Greece is considering deeper cuts in public sector wages and further tax increases on a range of products and professions to qualify for more aid, Greek newspapers said on Saturday. The plan may include scrapping bonuses to civil servants and employees in state-run companies, newspapers Ta Nea and Isotimia reported, without citing any sources. The government may also lower or scrap tax-free thresholds on property holdings and the self-employed, raise consumption taxes on soft drinks and certain fuel types or shift a range of products to a higher VAT-bracket, other newspapers said.
Papandreou vowed on Saturday to take any measure necessary to secure more funding for his country. "Greece must convince everyone of its determination," he said. But a large majority of Greeks say they cannot take more austerity as the country enters its third year of recession.
Eighty percent of respondents told pollster MRB they refused to make any further sacrifices to get more EU/IMF aid, an MRB poll for paper Realnews showed. The same poll shows Papandreou's ruling Socialist PASOK neck-and-neck with the opposition conservatives, with both parties scoring 21.5 percent each. In the previous MRB poll in April, PASOK had an 1.8 point-lead.But Papandreou warned that any failure to push through the plan might lead the country straight to default. "At the moment, it does not seem as if Greece can cover its 2012 borrowing needs... from the market," he said in the interview.
Papandreou pledged to speed up a 50 billion euro privatisation programme, a key part of efforts to shore up finances without a debt restructuring. However, he reiterated that the state would keep stakes in firms managing vital public goods and services, such as water and electricity utilities.
In an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, Juncker urged Greece to set up a trustee institution to help privatize state assets, similar to the body that privatised East German companies after the fall of communism.
"Henceforth, the European Union will escort Greece's privatisation programme as if we were conducting it ourselves," he said.

William and Kate's marriage certificate will be kept secret

William and Kate’s marriage certificate will not be made publicly available, officials have indicated.
A little-known clause in the Marriage Act gives Royals the right to exempt themselves from normal legal requirements whereby all marriage certificates are available to view at a register office.
Officials at Westminster Abbey said they were in discussion with Clarence House on the issue but were not planning to make the marriage certificate available.
The General Register Office, which holds details of all marriages, also said yesterday it would not be supplying public copies of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s certificate.
‘Certificates are never available after Royal Weddings,’ it said. ‘For the same reason, it would not be possible to obtain a copy of the marriage certificate relating to the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.’
